The South Dakota Historical Society received a certificate of incorporation in 1891. Apparently failing to flourish, it was reactivated in 1901 as the South Dakota State Historical Society. Since South Dakota has no legally recognized archival depository, some state records are maintained by the Society, along with its private sector holdings.
