Organizational history of Manitoba. Board of Education. Catholic section

In 1890, an Act of the Legislative Assembly established the Department of Education, superseding the Board of Education that had existed since 1871. The newly-appointed Executive Council was responsible for appointing school inspectors, fixing salaries of all department officers, prescribing forms for school registers and reports, and arranging for the certification of teachers. An Advisory Board, reporting to the Council, was responsible for school buildings, curriculum, religious exercises, and the organization and government of Normal, Model and High Schools. The Department of Education acted as a sub-department until 1908, when it was given a full-time Minister. (Based on information from Archives of Manitoba.)
