Le Métis

May 27, 1871 - September 29, 1881

Founded May 27, 1871 by Québec-born lawyer and journalist Joseph Royal and edited by Royal and Joseph Dubuc, Le Métis was the province’s first French-language weekly newspaper. It was published regularly until September 29, 1881 when it was replaced by Le Manitoba. A Conservative newspaper, it sought to defend Métis land rights, encourage French-Canadian immigration to Manitoba, and promote federalism and the French-Catholic cause.
