Governor McTavish to resume the
administration of public affairs.
In such case, by the Act of the
Imperial Parliament of last Session,
all the public functionaries will
still remain in power, and the
Council of Assiniboia will be restored
to their former postition.
Will you be kind enough to make
full explanations to the Council on behalf of the
Canadian Government, as to the
feeling which animate not only
the Goveror General but the whole
Government with respect to the mode
of dealing with the Nor. West. We
have fully explained to you and
desire you to assure the Council
authoratively that it is the intention
of Canada to grant to the people of
the North West the same free
Institutions which they themselves
enjoy. Had not these unfortunate
events occurred, the Canadian
Government had hoped long
