Biography of McCarthy, D'Alton, 1836-1898

D’Alton McCarthy (1836-1898) came to Canada from Ireland in 1847, was called to the bar in 1858, and was elected to parliament as a Conservative in 1876. He was a very strong opponent of the use of French outside of Quebec and supported the Manitoba government’s elimination of separate schools.
